Children across the country are preparing to return to classrooms for the upcoming school year. While back-to-school season can be an exciting time for students, it also requires preparedness by parents to ensure their children have all they need for class. Below are some back to school tips to help children with autism successfully navigate their first day and beyond.
Talk About the First Day
Begin discussing back-to-school with your child several weeks before their first day. This can help reduce any anxiety your child may be feeling about the upcoming year and give you an opportunity to answer any of your child’s questions. This is also a great time to begin role playing school-specific situations that your child may not be familiar with, such as being called on in class, navigating the lunch room, or joining group play at recess.
Practice Your Morning Routine
Create your morning routine that you plan to use during the school year and practice a few weeks before the start of school. It can be helpful to make small changes over several weeks, such as waking up 10 minutes earlier each day, to help your child ease into the new routine. Visual supports, such as schedules, cue cards, etc. could assist with your child adjusting to their new routine.
Coordinate With Your Child’s School
Take a Tour: If possible, schedule a guided tour of the school with your child. A tour can be especially helpful if your child is attending a new school. Even if returning to a school previously attended, touring can help you familiarize yourself and your child with the different classrooms and areas to navigate throughout the year.
Meet Your Child’s Teacher: See about meeting your child’s teacher before the year begins to introduce your child and discuss any accommodations your child will need. Similarly, if your child will be riding the bus to school, ask to meet the bus driver as well.
Consider Sensory Needs: When preparing for back-to-school, be sure to consider your child’s unique sensory needs. Discuss with the school which toys (ex. tabletop fidgets) and sensory items (ex. noise canceling headphones) are permitted to pack for your child to ensure their comfort.
